Tasmania news: Premier says coal mining on farming land ‘improbable’, drug tests for councillors a step closer

‘Very unlikely’ coal mining exploration licences will be granted

Tasmania’s Premier has told Parliament he considers it “improbable” that extended mining exploration licences or mining leases will be granted to companies seeking to mine thermal coal on agricultural land.

The Tasmanian Greens asked Mr Hodgman whether he agreed there was no place for new thermal coal mines in Tasmania during question time this morning.

It comes after revelations that four companies currently hold coal exploration licenses in Tasmania, including two which have received government grants.
