But the South Korean conglomerate also says the crisishas sparked a fundamental change in how people live — and predicted that the world’s reliance on digital services is here to stay as millions of people hunker down at home.
The environmental impact of deep-sea mining is only partially known. Also, there is a lack of standards to regulate mining and set binding thresholds for the impact on the local organisms. Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology with colleagues at the Alfred Wegener Institute, the GEOMAR and others describe that deep-sea mining-related disturbances have a long-term impact on the natural ecosystem functions and microbial communities at the seafloor.
When Aeone Singson graduated from Seattle Central Community College with an associate’s degree in computer science, her prospects for a career as a UX designer had never seemed bleaker.
At that point, she had spent years going to school on and off while working full-time minimum wage jobs to pay for tuition. When she finally received the financial aid she needed to finish her associate’s degree in 2014, she still had to hustle between three campus jobs to make ends meet. By the end of it, the two most traditional paths to a tech career — a bachelor’s degree or a bootcamp — didn’t seem financially feasible without a job guaranteed at the end of it.
While so much debate is going on about the effects of cannabis on your physical fitness, the mental health field was not discussed so much in recent years. That is probably because all expert psychologists were busy trying to figure out how reality shows and violent video games affect our mental state. Now, the time has come for everybody to make case studies and give expert opinions on how the plant could improve or mess with our minds.

The biggest technology stocks halted their recent strong rally and turned sharply lower on Tuesday, putting pressure on the broader market. The S&P 500 was on track for its fourth positive session in five as hopes that the economy will soon reopen boosted areas of the market that had been hit the hardest. But the upside was limited by earnings letdowns and guidance withdrawals amid the pandemic.
South Africa’s mining industry has recorded nine cases of Covid-19 to date, most involving head office staff. Meanwhile, the industry’s gradual reboot has reached about 30% capacity for the sector as a whole.
These were some of the details to emerge from a virtual briefing by the Minerals Council South Africa on Tuesday, 28 April. Several companies including Sibanye-Stillwater, Anglo American and Gold Fields also provided presentations about the steps they are taking to prevent the spread of the coronavirus as they ramp up operations. These include intensive screening and the provision of protective gear.
No miners have been recalled yet from neighbouring states such as Lesotho – which still provides a significant percentage of the industry’s migrant workforce – because South Africa’s borders remain closed. Many of those workers have, to date, been paid at least in part, depending on the company that employs them, but that will not continue indefinitely. Among other things, this will mean additional hardship in politically volatile and impoverished Lesotho since its economy partly depends on remittances from workers employed by South Africa’s mines.
